Detailed Product Overview
The HIOKI CT6844A AC/DC High-accuracy Current Clamp measures rated currents up to 500 A on conductors up to 20 mm, combining a high current range with a compact opening. Its zero-flux fluxgate technology holds a basic accuracy of ±0.2 % rdg across both AC and DC, with the fluxgate element showing minimal drift even as temperature changes during the measurement. With a bandwidth from DC to 500 kHz, it also captures the battery and consumer currents that enter the vehicle's energy balance in WLTP measurements.
Its compact 20 mm opening also fits onto phase conductors and busbars in confined spaces, such as e-drive units and battery junction boxes, where a larger clamp would not fit. Its wide operating temperature range of -40 °C to 85 °C covers both settings, from enginecompartment measurements to extended test-bench runs.
From inverter testing to WLTP measurement
The CT6844A connects to oscilloscopes and other data acquisition (DAQ) systems through a
HIOKI current sensor interface (CT9555, CT9556, CT9557), which converts its ME15W
signal to a BNC output and supplies the sensor's power, at a voltage output ratio of 4 mV/A.
HIOKI power analyzers such as the PW8001 and PW4001, and the MR6000 Memory
Recorder through the U8977 current unit, connect the sensor directly through their own
ME15W port, without that extra interface. Because it needs only a 20 mm core diameter, the
CT6844A can still be fitted around the conductor in confined spaces such as e-drive units or
battery junction boxes. The 3-meter cable covers most installations, with a CT9902 extension
cable adding another 5 m if needed.
Much like the deskew function on an oscilloscope, the phase shift correction available with HIOKI power analyzers such as the PW8001 and PW4001 realigns the current and voltage channels using a single correction value. That single value is enough because the CT6844A's phase error stays close to a constant time delay across its entire frequency range, rather than changing with frequency. The result is automatic compensation that keeps power measurements accurate at high frequencies and low power factors alike.
500 A through a 20 mm opening
The CT6844A packs a 500 A range into the compact 20 mm form factor, so high currents can
be measured even where space around the conductor is tight. That smaller core also
contributes to its higher bandwidth of 500 kHz, compared with the 200 kHz of the CT6845A,
which offers the same current rating but a larger opening. Its zero-flux stability makes it just
as dependable in the vehicle as in the lab.
