Detailed Product Overview
Intermittent leakage current problems in electrical installations are not always present at the moment of inspection. RCD or GFCI trips can occur only under specific operating conditions, at certain times, or when several loads switch simultaneously, making the cause difficult to identify with a handheld clamp meter during a short measurement. The HIOKI CM4003-90 combines the CM4003 AC leakage clamp meter with the Z3210 Bluetooth Adapter in a single set, adding Bluetooth communication for use with smartphones and tablets. It provides the same µA leakage current measurement as the CM4002, covering AC currents
from 60 µA to 200 A, and adds a wired RMS and waveform output for connection to a
recorder or other data acquisition system for long term monitoring. Very small leakage
currents, cumulative leakage, differential current and load current changes can therefore be
monitored and documented over time when the cause of a trip cannot be captured during a
spot check.
Leakage current, differential current and load current
The CM4003-90 provides six AC current ranges from 6 mA to 200 A and measures leakage currents down to 60 µA. This covers leakage current, differential current and load current measurement in a single clamp meter. In leakage current applications, differential current corresponds to the residual current flowing to earth. With a 40 mm jaw, the instrument accommodates larger conductors and multi-core cables in distribution systems where currents from multiple circuits need to be observed over time. The instrument covers frequencies from 15 Hz to 2 kHz, including higher-frequency leakage
currents generated by inverters and switching power supplies. A selectable 50/60 Hz filter
suppresses these components and isolates the leakage current relevant to RCD tripping. A
threshold alarm indicates the exceedance of a defined leakage current level by means of a
buzzer and red warning backlight and provides pass or fail evaluation against a user-defined
limit. The display shows current and frequency simultaneously and is backlit for
measurements in low-light environments. Additional functions include Auto Hold,
Max/Min/Avg recording, inrush current measurement and peak value recording for capturing
transient current peaks.
Output and external power supply for long term monitoring
Unlike the CM4002, the CM4003-90 provides switchable RMS and waveform output for connection to a recorder or other data acquisition system. The supplied 1.5 m L9097 Connection Cable provides a BNC male output for direct connection to recorder inputs and a USB C power input for external supply of the instrument during long term measurements. A 1.0 m L9510 USB A to USB C cable is also included for power connection. The output can be switched between RMS value and waveform output. The RMS output is
refreshed five times per second and is suited for recording measured current values over
time with a logger, recorder or other data acquisition system with a voltage input. The
waveform output is intended for recorder-based monitoring of current waveforms, for
example with a memory recorder such as the MR8870 or MR8880.
For stationary monitoring, the optional Z1013 AC Adapter can be used as a USB power
source. For data acquisition systems with 4 mm inputs, the optional 9704 Conversion
Adapter provides a BNC female to banana plug interface. This configuration makes the
CM4003-90 suitable for long term recording of leakage current, differential current and load
current. Because of this output and external power supply design, the CM4003-90 is rated
CAT III 300 V.
Bluetooth communication
Because the Z3210 Bluetooth Adapter is included with the CM4003-90, Bluetooth communication is available without additional accessories. Measurement values can be transferred to a smartphone or tablet for documentation, annotation and report creation. With the free GENNECT Cross app for iOS and Android, measured values can be assigned to individual measurement locations, documented together with site photos and reviewed on site. Measured values can also be displayed in real time on a mobile device when the instrument is installed in locations where the display is not easily visible. The included adapter also expands the event recording workflow. Threshold values and
recording conditions can be set from a mobile device, and recorded events can later be
reviewed together with trip start times, trip stop times and maximum leakage values. A
continuous Bluetooth connection is not required during recording. The Z3210 also supports
HID functionality, allowing measured values to be entered directly into Excel or other
applications. In this mode, the adapter is recognized as a Bluetooth keyboard by the
connected device.
Designed and manufactured in Japan
For decades, HIOKI has been developing current measurement technology for demanding electrical measurement applications, from clamp meters to high precision current sensors. All of them are designed and built at the company’s own production site in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The close link between development and manufacturing, together with in house control of sensor technology, mechanics and electronics, becomes evident in daily use.Learn more in our blog
