Detailed Product Overview

In installation and maintenance work, insulation resistance testing is commonly required when checking wiring, distribution boards, motors, or electrical equipment after repairs. In many cases, a dedicated insulation tester is the practical choice, without the need for a full PAT tester or multifunction installation tester.

The IR4056 is a digital, battery-powered insulation tester with five test voltages from 50 V to 1000 V. It measures insulation resistance up to 4000 MΩ and is used for testing electrical installations, motors, machinery, and control systems. The instrument complies with EN 61557 requirements for insulation resistance and protective conductor (PE) continuity testing in low-voltage installations.

Practical PASS/FAIL Indication

The integrated comparator evaluates the insulation measurement in approximately 0.8 seconds and indicates PASS or FAIL. This is particularly helpful when working in confined spaces or overhead installations. PASS and FAIL are signaled acoustically, and in the event of a FAIL result, the display backlight turns red.

The PASS/FAIL threshold can be set easily. Individual threshold settings are stored separately for each test voltage range, even after switching the instrument off or changing the range. When selecting the 500 V or 1000 V test voltages, the output must be unlocked before the first measurement to prevent unintended activation of high test voltage levels.

Protective Conductor (PE) and Voltage Check

Protective conductor (PE) testing is performed with a 200 mA test current in accordance with EN 61557-4. The higher test current helps detect poor connections, oxidized contacts, and increased resistance at terminals – unlike the low-current continuity function of a typical DMM.

In addition to insulation and low-resistance measurement, the instrument includes AC/DC voltage testing up to 600 V. This function allows the user to verify that the test object is not live before starting an insulation measurement, eliminating the need for a separate preliminary check with another instrument.

Designed for Everyday

Use The IR4056 complies with CAT III 600 V and has been drop tested to 1 m. The solid hard case forms a single unit with the instrument and provides space for test leads and accessories. The test leads remain connected to the instrument – even during transport. The high-contrast display remains clearly readable even under difficult lighting conditions, and a bright backlight supports work in dark distribution boards.

An optional L9788-10 test lead with integrated LED illumination and measurement trigger is available. The measurement can be started directly from the probe, which is particularly helpful when both hands are required to position the test leads securely on the test object.

The IR4056 is HIOKI’s most popular portable insulation tester in Europe. Its success is largely driven by its robust construction and straightforward operation, focusing on essential insulation testing functions without any added complexity. Like all HIOKI insulation testers, it is designed and made in Japan at HIOKI’s own factories in Nagano Prefecture.
